Tuesday Nights in Grand Case

Harmony Nights are back! The event has returned to Grand Case, but with a new name. Now known as "Tuesday Nights in Grand Case," this lively street party is being orchestrated by the Grand Case Lolos Association. The popular annual event kicked off on December 16 with Grand Case's Christmas Parade and will continue every Tuesday night through April.

Normally a quaint fishing village on the northwest coast of St. Martin's French side, Grand Case is something else on Harmony Nights. Every Tuesday night Grand Case's main thoroughfare is closed to traffic and open to pedestrians. The festivities begin at 6 p.m. and last until 11 p.m. Musicians and dancers parade through the street, while local artists and street vendors sell their art, paintings, jewelry, clothing, and food at tables lining the main street. The town's shopkeepers stay open late, and Grand Case's renowned restaurants offer plenty of nightly specials, all displayed on chalkboards outside their entrances. Diners have their pick of French, Caribbean, American, Italian, and Oriental cuisine. Wonderful wines from around the world are served at most of the restaurants, some of which have a sommelier on staff. Those looking for a more casual meal can visit the lolos--these barbeque shacks are famous on the island for their barbeque ribs, chicken, and lobster.

On Tuesday nights, locals and visitors love to watch the street performers and listen to the various musicians. Attendees have enjoyed the sounds of merengue, Zouk, reggae, jazz, a string band, and even a conch shell player. The dancers and colorful costumes add visual excitement, and everyone has a grand time in Grand Case.

Tuesday Nights in Grand Case are not to be missed if you're looking for a fun night on the town.

Restaurant of the Month - L'Auberge Gourmande, Grand Case, St. Martin

This Grand Case establishment is located in one of Grand Case's oldest buildings, a more than 120-year-old Creole house. Diners can choose to dine inside this beautiful home or outside on the terrace. The restaurant has received rave reviews for its fine French cuisine and well-stocked wine cellar. Readers of Caribbean Travel and Life magazine put L'Auberge Gourmande on the list of Best Restaurants in the magazine's Best of the Caribbean 2007 poll.

Start your meal with cream of asparagus soup, garlic escargot, frog legs, or the fabulous foie gras with roasted pears. The baked goat cheese and Roquefort in phyllo is another popular appetizer. The restaurant is known for its well-prepared meat and seafood dishes. Those preferring a meat entree can't go wrong with the beef filet with either morels or blue cheese sauce or the roasted rack of lamb. Diners have also been impressed with the pork stuffed with walnuts and apricots and the duck tenderloin. Another interesting offering is the saddle of rabbit with polenta and the veal tenderloin in mustard sauce.

Seafood lovers will enjoy the grilled sea scallops, mahi mahi with citrus butter and ratatouille, or the scallop fricassee with bacon, curry, and a sour apple sauce. Another good choice is the red snapper with eggplant, preserved tomatoes, and basil. Some of the restaurant's popular dishes are the French sea bass grilled with fennel and the grilled whole sole in almond butter meunier. For dessert try the mini-chocolate cake with its soft, chocolate center, the puff pastry napoleon with hazelnut sauce and white chocolate sauce, or the vanilla cream brulee.

The restaurant has a well-stocked wine cellar, and is known for its wonderful service and great atmosphere. L'Auberge Gourmande is open for dinner only and reservations are recommended at this intimate restaurant.
